The Last Nation in Prophecy
Lesson 33

The last nation brought to view in prophecy is found in the last part of Revelation 13. This nation is represented by a beast that is different from the others. When we look at the beast of Daniel 7 and the one in the first part of Revelation 13, we notice that they are fierce and wild animals. By contrast, however, this one is said to look like a lamb; nothing is more gentle and harmless than a lamb. Strangely enough though, when it speaks, it speaks like a dragon; and nothing could be more ferocious and fierce than a dragon.

1. From where had the first beast in this chapter come?

Revelation 13:1
Revelation 13:1

Note: Compare this with Daniel 7:3.

2. What was represented by water?

Revelation 17:15
Revelation 17:15

3. From where did this beast come?

Revelation 13:11
Revelation 13:11

Note: The word which is here used to describe the manner of its coming up is Anabainon, the meaning of which is, to grow, or spring up, very much as a growing plant. This is in contrast to those nations that arose out of the sea as a result of strife. (Compare with Daniel 7:2–3.) If water represents people and nations, we would then understand this new power to arise from an area of more sparse population, and it would be remarkable, in that it would not come up as the result of conflict and striving between nations.

4. What was said to have happened to the wound received by the first beast?

Revelation 13:12
Revelation 13:12

Note: The deadly wound began the healing with the election of a new pope, March 14, 1800. The healing process moved very slowly until 1929 when Cardinal Gasparri and Benito Mussolini signed the concordat which restored temporal powers to the Papacy. Once again, the Vatican began to function as a political state. No one can question that since that time the Papacy has regained much of the prestige lost two centuries ago.

5. What was the second beast said to have?

Revelation 13:11
Revelation 13:11

Note: Notice that in speaking of these horns, John adds, “like a lamb.” In addition to denoting the character of this beast, showing it to be of an innocent and harmless nature, the terminology would suggest that it was a youthful, or new power at this time, or he simply could have referred to them as horns, just as Daniel did when speaking of the two horns on the ram in Daniel 8.

6. Who in the Bible is represented by a lamb?

John 1:29
John 1:29

Note: Because a lamb is a representation of Jesus, we would understand that this nation would be Christian, or gentle in appearance.

7. At what time was this beast to arise?

Revelation 13:10–12
Revelation 13:10–12

Note: Clearly, this power would arise after the deadly wound was received, and it would ultimately help to restore the lost power of the beast before it. See verse 12. There is only one nation that fulfills all the particulars describing this new power and that is the United States. The Papacy received its deadly wound in 1798, but a few years after the United States received its independence. The United States became a world power without the strife and bloodshed that generally accompanies the rise of nations; most of its land acquisitions were made by purchase, rather than by conquest. It also came into being in an area that was sparsely populated.

As to the horns: A horn can represent a nation or kingdom, or even a part of that kingdom, as we saw in Daniel 8 where the two horns on the ram represented the two nations of the Medes and the Persians, making up the Medo-Persian Empire, or in the example of the he-goat’s notable horn, which represented the first king of Greece. The United States is represented by the lamblike beast; its two horns representing the two great principles upon which this nation was founded—civil and religious liberty.

8. Who is represented by a dragon in Scripture?

Revelation 12:9
Revelation 12:9

Note: While this beast looked Christlike, when it spoke it would not be with the gentleness of Christ, but with the voice of Satan.

9. What will it say?

Revelation 13:14
Revelation 13:14

10. How will the people be led to form this image?

Revelation 13:14 (first part)
Revelation 13:14 (first part)

Note: Beginning with Adam and Eve, Satan has sought to gain control of the world through deception. See Revelation 12:9.

11. What power will it seek to exercise?

Revelation 13:12
Revelation 13:12

Note: It has been the practice of the Papacy, wherever possible, to exercise her authority through civil government to further her own ends. During the many centuries that the first beast dominated the politics of the world, it ruthlessly stamped out all opposition to its dogma, putting to death all who differed from it in religious faith. Whatever may have been a church’s relationship to Christ, when that church seeks to use civil authority to force the conscience of men, she has left her relationship with Christ in favor of an unlawful, or an adulterous, relationship with the world. In so doing she has left the manner of Christ in favor of the methods of the dragon.

For the United States to become a persecuting power would require a radical change of policy. To many this seems unthinkable. But as men depart from God, they become immoral. The result is the withdrawal of God’s Spirit, and disasters follow. Responding to these calamities, the religious leaders tell people that these things are the result of failing to have religious standards. In this they are correct, but they fail to remember that Jesus said, “Whosoever will, let him come,” and that heart religion is the only religion that is acceptable to God. Rather than seeking for reformation and revival, and looking to God for the power to live godly lives, they look to the state to supply the lacking power.

12. How will the United States relate to the Papacy?

Revelation 13:15
Revelation 13:15

Note: We see that the United States, for many years the bastion of religious freedom, will become intolerant and despotic in enforcing religious laws.

13. What does this second beast require all to receive?

Revelation 13:16
Revelation 13:16

14. What is the threat used to force people to receive this mark?

Revelation 13:17
Revelation 13:17

15. During this time of persecution what is promised God’s people?

Isaiah 33:16
Isaiah 33:16

16. What is said regarding those who perish in the persecution that will come upon God’s people?

Revelation 14:13
Revelation 14:13

17. Who only will refuse to bow to this apostasy?

Revelation 13:8

18. Where did John see those who were persecuted, finally standing?

Revelation 15:2
Revelation 15:2

19. What punishment will fall on those who join in this world-wide apostasy?

Revelation 14:9–10
Revelation 14:9–10

Already there are shadows of the approaching night as it casts its shadows before it. In the establishment of a formal diplomatic mission with the Vatican the United States has given official recognition to the Church of Rome. We see in the efforts of some religious groups an attempt to establish laws favorable to religious practice; laws promoting prayer in public schools or for Sunday sacredness. All such legislation, no matter how good the stated reasons, is aimed at creating a breach in the wall separating church and state. This opens the way for the religious intolerance of the past to be repeated with oppression and persecution. This power, professing to be lamblike in character, will speak as the dragon. Those who believe they are enforcing God’s will, will in fact, force Satan’s mark upon the people.
